Stages of kidney cancer

The stage of kidney cancer helps the doctor to determine which treatment is suitable in that particular stage. There are four main stages of kidney cancer.

Stage 1 – In stage 1 kidney cancer, the tumor size is less than 7 cm. It has not spread to anywhere outside the kidney. The preferred treatment for stage 1 kidney cancer is surgery. This stage of cancer is most likely to be cured by the surgery.

Stage 2 – In stage 2, the cancer tumor is larger than 7 cm and it is still not spread outside of the kidney. The preferable treatment option for stage 2 kidney cancer is surgery.

Stage 3 – In the 3rd stage of kidney cancer, the cancer tumor has spread outside the kidney, but it has not spread to nearby organs. It may have spread to a blood vessel of the kidney or the lymph nodes. To cure the 3rd stage kidney cancer combination of different treatments is used. The treatments used for this stage include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgery.

Stage 4 – Stage 4 kidney cancer has spread outside the kidney. It may have spread to the abdominal cavity, adrenal glands, distant lymph nodes or any other organs like liver, lungs or bones. The targeted therapy, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy are some of the treatments used to treat 4th stage kidney cancer.

Early-stage kidney cancer tumors can be treated by traditional open surgery or by Laparoscopic Radical Nephrectomy (Laparoscopy).
